Sports Premium
What is Sports Premium?
The government is providing funding of £150 million each year for academic years 2017/18 and 2018/19 to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is jointly provided by the Department for Education, Health and Culture and Media and Sport. It will see money going directly to primary school head teachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and P.E; each school will receive £16,000 plus an extra £10 per pupil each year for the next two years. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in school.
Purpose of the Funding
Schools will spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this. Examples include additional sport clubs, equipment to support P.E and hiring specialist P.E teachers/qualified sport coaches.
What We Do
At St Michael’s Academy we recognise the contribution of P.E to the health and well-being of the children. In addition, to the action plan we have in place, it is considered that an innovative and varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all children.
Our priorities mean that the funding will be used for:
High quality teaching and learning
Promoting physical activity through cross curricular lessons
Promoting teamwork through competitive sports and 'friendly' games
Promote the emotional well-being of every child
Providing opportunities for children to try out new activities ie Change4Life Club
A cross curricular approach including physical elements
Develop life skills including each class swims every week, and targeting those needing it, intensive tuition.
Up-dating and expanding PE equipment and resources to enable a wider and new range of sports to be played.
Increased participation in district and county compettions and tournaments.
We are spending the funding on using experienced and well qualified gym and swimming teachers to deliver inspirational lessons which have brought increased enthusiasm and skill to our children. Observing excellent practice over a number of weeks is also allowing our teachers to develop and extend their knowledge of specific teaching skills.
