PE

We are all athletes

At St Michael's, P.E is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where the children have access to a wide range of activities. We do this with the belief that if taught well, and the children are allowed to succeed, then they will continue to lead physically active lives here and beyond. To us, a high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. Through teaching the curriculum and with an abundance of offers and enriching extra-curricular activities, we provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health - mentally and physically. We also promote opportunities to take part in competitive sports and events for our school - building character and embedding our school values: Positivity, Respect, Integrity, Determination and Expression.

Enrichment

We were delighted to welcome Kirsty Way to St Michael's in May. Kirsty is a British athlete who competes in trampoline gymnastics. She won seven medals at the World Trampoline Gymnastics Championships between the years 2015 to 2023. All children completed a fitness circuit with Kirsty and then she held a motivational assembly. This was part of the Sports for Champions Scheme helping unfunded athletes, and our school raised a whopping £923 for her!

We had the privilege of having Ryan Glover - a professional footballer for Barnet FC - visit us at St Michael's. The children thoroughly enjoyed developing new skills and increasing their knowledge of what it takes to be successful from such a talent!

How PE is taught at St Michael's

PE is taught in rotation with art and ICT. Children take part in an hour lesson of physical activity per week where they are encouraged to express themselves through being physically active. Each session starts with a warm-up based around improving their fundamental movement skills and then go on to learn specific skills and key knowledge in a variety of invasion games, net and wall games, dance, gymnastics and athletics. Children are then encouraged to apply these in competitive situations and follow rules that have been learnt. Hall (1).jpeg
