Music at St Michael's Academy

At St Michael’s Academy we use Music Express to support out teaching of music. Children have the opportunity to enjoy musical experiences through listening, singing, movement, dance and by playing tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments. Year 3 pupils have the opportunity to learn the recorder and Year 4 the ukulele. All children take part in a singing assembly once a week where they learn songs related to the core value focus, season, or service.

We pride ourselves on the productions we put on throughout the year. Year four work extremely hard during the autumn term to put on a spectacular pantomime every year, while year six always put on a production to be proud of in the summer. In the past we have had The Lion King, Matilda, Bugsy Malone and Annie. Additionally, years three, four and five will put on a concert, ‘An Evening of Song,’ to showcase their learning towards the end of the year.

Visits and Visitors

To support the teaching of music we provide engaging opportunities for our pupils by inviting guests into our school. Year five had the opportunity to see a live orchestral performance of music from Ten Pieces, featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra. The whole school has also been treated to a performance from Wells Cathedral School Junior Big Band.

At St Michael’s Academy we are proud of the dedication our pupils have in attending the school choir. They regularly perform in our assemblies, church services and summer fayres to showcase their work. The choir was invited to sing at Johnson Park as part of the Poppy of Honour tour. Around Christmas, we have great fun singing at the Quedam shopping centre in town, visit care homes around Yeovil to sing them Christmas Carols and pass on the enjoyment for music by having a good sing song!
